Berisha’s lost speech

BY ENTON ABILEKA After the meeting with the OSBE ambassador, and after the meeting with Genc Ruli to choose the word of publication and the word of boycott, it is clear that the leader of the opposition still has not found the right formula to face an opposition that dominates this field. He has tried twice and failed, because both times he made the wrong statement. The first time, he came out with a show of force, comparing the Constitutional Court sanction with Tiananmen, anarchy and the PP with dictatorship. No one heard him. That was understandable. Sali Berisha had distorted the PD, even the first statement by and from the name. The second time, seeing that the word of boycott still had not been found either, he came out with a statement like the previous one, from which only the party cousins took him hostage. Berisha’s second statement, with a serious name from his own mouth, also seems out of place at this time when the most serious conflict since the party’s legalization is taking place in the history of this party. Many have thought that this clash within the ranks of the PS works to the PS’s advantage and that for this reason many are interested in weakening Sali Berisha. If something like this is happening in the PD for the first time in this transition period, it is hardly without help from the escalation of the situation by its protagonists. After the dismissal of Tritan Shehu, who represented the traditional balance within the party, the PD has been plunged into a real crisis. We are no longer talking about half of the parliamentary group being against Berisha, but about even more than that. It was President Meidani’s wisdom that tactfully opened the door of negotiations for the PD. He is now maintaining a cautious role, not attacking it. Apart from this uprising in Berisha’s "yard", the country still remains unresolved in terms of the government crisis. This is also another problem and another burden of the transition. From Enkelejd Alibeaj’s attack on the PS and from the named reaction occurring simultaneously within the PD, it is clear that political statements are becoming a frequent tool to fill the vacuum left by the lack of choice. The real problem now is that since the day Berisha placed it at the center of politics with such rhetoric, statements have been replacing politics. In this vacuum of declarations, Berisha, the OSBE ambassador and Genc Ruli are surely looking for a single word to get the party out of this dead end. Page 4

OSBE: We are tired of boycotts

Ambassador Dan Everts concerned about Berisha’s actions The international community unanimously condemns the Democratic Party’s decision to leave the institutions S. Komninoi [? The international community is tired of the boycotts of the PD. The OSBE Ambassador, Dan Everts, suggested to Berisha that he abandon this option. He said he is surprised that not only the members of the PD parliamentary group, the leadership and other officials of this party are not against leaving the institutions, but also he himself and the whole rest of the political spectrum. He emphasized that boycotts do not serve democracy and put the country in a difficult situation. As for the fact that the PD leadership has decided on a "gradual withdrawal" from the institutions, he said that the larger part of the opposition, which has nothing to do with the PD’s will-making process, will continue its political activity normally. Dan Everts said that as far as the international community is concerned, it is worried by this situation and expects a more institutional and more responsible stance. F2
